How is crypto taxed in Singapore?
Singapore has no capital gains tax, so most individual crypto investors pay no tax on gains. But trading as a business, or earning crypto, can be taxable.
Good news first: Singapore has no capital gains tax. For most individuals who buy crypto as a personal investment and hold it, gains are generally not taxed. But "generally" matters, and there are a few situations where crypto income is taxable.
When crypto gains are usually not taxed
If you buy crypto as a long-term personal investment and sell occasionally, any gain is usually treated as a capital gain, which isn't taxed in Singapore. Unrealised gains (price going up while you hold) are never taxed.
When crypto gains can be taxed
The Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) can treat your gains as taxable income if your activity looks like a trading business. IRAS looks at things like:
- How often you trade, and how much
- How long you hold before selling
- How organised it is, for example trading systematically like a job
- Why you bought in the first place
Someone trading many times a week to make short-term profits is far more likely to be seen as trading than someone who buys and holds for years.
Earning crypto
- Being paid in crypto for work or services is taxable income, just like being paid in dollars.
- Mining, staking or other rewards can be taxable, especially if done regularly or as a business. The rules here are detailed, so check IRAS guidance or ask a tax professional.
GST
Buying and selling digital payment tokens has been exempt from GST since 1 January 2020. If you pay for something with crypto, GST applies to what you bought, not to the crypto itself.
Keep records
Whatever your situation, keep simple records: dates, amounts, the value in SGD, fees and which platform you used. If IRAS ever asks, you'll be glad you did.
The short version
- Buy and hold as a personal investment: usually no tax.
- Trade frequently, like a business: profits may be taxed as income.
- Earn crypto from work: taxable income.
This is general information, not tax advice. Tax treatment depends on your circumstances. For anything significant, check IRAS's e-Tax guide on digital tokens or speak to a tax professional.
