Why is Bitcoin down today? The usual reasons, explained
Bitcoin falls for a handful of recurring reasons: interest rates, stock-market selloffs, ETF outflows, forced selling and big news. Here's how to tell which one it is today.
When Bitcoin drops, the cause is usually one of a handful of familiar reasons, often several at once. Knowing them makes a red day much less mysterious. For today's actual explanation, see today's read at the top of this page.
1. Interest rates and the US Federal Reserve
When the Fed signals that interest rates will stay high, or rise, investors tend to pull back from risky assets, and crypto is one of the riskiest. Days around a Fed decision are often jumpy. More in how the Fed affects Bitcoin.
2. The stock market is falling
Big funds often hold tech stocks and Bitcoin side by side. When tech shares sell off, those funds frequently sell Bitcoin too, so crypto can fall even with no crypto news at all.
3. Money leaving Bitcoin ETFs
US spot Bitcoin ETFs let big investors buy Bitcoin through a normal brokerage account. Days when more money leaves these funds than enters them add selling pressure. See Bitcoin ETF flows.
4. Forced selling (liquidations)
Many traders borrow to make bigger bets. When prices fall far enough, exchanges automatically close those positions, which means more selling, which pushes prices lower, which closes more positions. That chain reaction explains many sudden drops. See crypto liquidations.
5. Big news
Hacks, regulation, lawsuits, a large holder moving coins, or wider world events (conflict, oil price spikes) can all spark a selloff.
6. Nothing special
Sometimes prices simply drift after a strong run as people take profits. Not every red day has a dramatic cause.
