Support and resistance explained simply
Support and resistance are price levels where buying or selling has tended to show up. Here's how to read them without becoming a trader.
Support and resistance are price levels that traders watch because the market has reacted at them before. You don't need to trade to find them useful: they explain why news stories talk about Bitcoin "holding" or "breaking" a certain price.
Support: a floor
Support is a price where buyers have tended to step in, stopping a fall. If Bitcoin has bounced off US$80,000 a few times, traders call US$80,000 support. Many people placed buy orders there before, and may do so again.
Resistance: a ceiling
Resistance is a price where sellers have tended to appear, stopping a rise. If Bitcoin keeps stalling near US$85,000, that's resistance.
Why they matter
These levels become self-fulfilling to a degree, simply because so many people watch the same numbers:
- A level holds: confidence builds and the move often reverses.
- A level breaks: it can trigger a fast move, as stop orders and liquidations cluster just beyond it. An old floor that breaks often becomes the new ceiling, and the other way round.
Round numbers
Big round numbers like US$80,000 or US$100,000 often act as support or resistance just because they're memorable.
Limits
Levels are zones, not exact lines, and they break all the time when news is big enough. They describe where the market has reacted before, not where it must react next.
